Part 1: Create your own Comic Strip - 100 pts
- Download the comic strip document below to see what you will need to do for your comic.
- Keep in mind that you MUST create your own characters. You may NOT use something that already exists. Be creative and as always, be school appropriate.
- Using Google Slides you will create a portfolio of all of the designs you've created this year.
- Slide 1 should be your title slide and include your name and have your anatomy of a graphic designer image on it.
- The following slides should include the work you've created throughout the year AND a brief description of what it is and what software you used to create it.
- Your 2nd to last slide should include a paragraph explaining your design journey through this class. Where did you start? Where did you end? What new things did you learn? What software do you prefer?
- Your final slide should include your name and contact information.
- Remember that your portfolio should look professional and be something that you could send a potential employer.

Start by finishing your human/animal portraits before moving on.
You & Your Younger Self Project
Your task is simple, use a current picture of yourself, and a younger you, and create a fun portrait. Use simple backgrounds, and find images that will work well together. Focusing on layering, and attention to detail to make these look at real as possible. See the examples below. Your goal is to make it look like a real picture!
1. Create 3 portraits of yourself. (You must use 6 different pictures of yourself and have a simple background for each)
2. Check the Photoshop rubric and make sure you meet the expectations.
3. Email me your final images.

Using a superhero or villain as the model, create an advertisements . Try to make the composition as seamless as possible. Match colors, saturation and brightness levels between the photos. See the examples below. You will need to create 4 advertisements and follow the photoshop rubric.

This project is going to bring together lots of different tools and techniques that we have learned previously . . . most importantly the selection tools. We have learned how to work with text , use textures and patterns, and create selections from images. We’re going to put all of this together into creating the case designs for video games. I have included lots of resources for you to use, so make sure you utilize everything provided . . . the goal for this is to be as realistic (and creative) as possible, and the best way to ensure that you are creating something current is to DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Remember the exercise we did called Composite? We chose a good “Sky” picture and a good “Landscape” picture and put the 2 together. You can use that exercise to create your Game Box Design.

The contributing artists each get the exact same set of 8 shapes, the Elements. With these shapes they are challenged to create their own unique design, within the limitations provided in the Rule book. Designers are challenged to create a unique piece within a strict set of rules. It all comes down to pure skills and creativity.
THE RULE BOOK - To be followed EXACTLY as written. Read Carefully!
What exactly are you allowed to do and isn’t allowed with the Elements?
The following rules have to be followed when creating your artwork:
1. You’re allowed to rotate, flip and duplicate the Shapes
2. You are not obliged to use all the Shapes
3. Scaling is allowed, but only proportionally - HOLD SHIFT / 5-Part Sequence - no skewing or free transform.
4. You can add, subtract, intersect and group elements as you see fit
5. The use of color is unrestricted, you can create your own color schemes
6. You are allowed to use gradients
7. The Shapes may only be filled, the use of strokes is not allowed
8. You are not allowed to use filters or effects (e.g. drop shadows)
With these limitations in place each artist will face the same challenge. The rules will be applied strictly.
The most important thing to bear in mind is that you are free to do as you see fit, as long as a viewer of the artwork is able to see that it is composed out of the Elements.

Today we will be creating and designing a pretend Ransom Note / Blackmail letter, but adding a little humor. Using cut out letters from the internet, magazines or newspapers etc. You will design and write a ransom note. You will cut and paste the letters to an 8 1/2 x 11 Photoshop document. Creativity is essential. Put your words on curves, or around shapes. Use a different style of type for each letter. Use san serif fonts and serif fonts. Don't just do the "typical" ransom note. "As I am sure you have all seen many times in your life"

Today we will be creating an environmental poster. This isn't an elementary project, I'm looking for something more creative and more professional (see examples below).

- Select a current environmental issue impacting planet earth to use for your poster. Research this topic and brainstorm ideas, and visuals that could be used. You can choose a school appropriate issue that you're interested in.
- Create a New document in Photoshop at 11 X 15 inches at 240 ppi.
- The finished poster should use the chosen program's features and tools (i.e. layers, manipulation, effects, cinematic color grading, textures, brushes, blending modes, etc.) along with type to give an effective message on the chosen environmental awareness issue.
- Make sure that you use type to elevate your poster.
- Create your design and answer the following reflection questions.
- What message is being communicated to the viewer?
- How does the choice of font relate to the message and/or design?
- How have I created contrast between the lettering color and background?
- How does the image contribute to the effectiveness of the message?
- How does color, shape, and line contribute to the success of the poster?
- Email me your answers and your design once you are finished.

Finish your Tattoos before moving on. Playing Cards: You will create be creating a few playing cards with a unique design and theme. Be creative and keep the designs concise so they look like they belong together. Make sure your theme is evident when looking at them. Start by creating a template with grids to help guide you. You do not have to use traditional colors or designs. YOU MUST USE ILLUSTRATOR and DRAW all of your images! Dimensions: 2.5" by 3.5" (822 x 1112px) each .

Today you will create a realistic tattoo out of any design in Photoshop.
1. Using Photoshop, follow along with the video, using the files below. (you will need headphones)
2. First follow along, using the files below, and create the bird tattoo.
3. Second, create a personal tattoo in either Photoshop or Illustrator, creating any design you like, using the same technique as before. Using the same image of the women's shoulder as your canvas. Have fun!

Travel Poster Project
Objective: Create a Travel Poster for any destination. Research a Country / location of interest and Illustrate a known symbol or Landmark. Combine Text with Illustration. Use appropriate font faces and applications of color that reflects the region being advertised. Research and develop a campaign slogan. You will need to design 2 posters. This will mean 8 sketches for each design AND a research form for each design.

- Research a Global Location.
- Determine a known landmark for Illustration.
- Develop an advertising campaign slogan.
- Create thumbnail sketches prior to working with Illustrator. (minimum of 8)
- Determine color pallets that are common to the area being advertised.
- Determine font faces that are appropriate for poster subject matter.
- Combine content generated from research steps into a Travel poster.
- Evidence of Research. (See Research Handout) You will need 2 of these.
- Minimum of 8 thumbnail sketches per poster. (Hand sketched, NOT digital sketches)
- Illustration of known landmark or symbol on EACH poster. (This means you need to draw it)
- Use of colors that represent the are of interest such as state or national flag colors.
- Use of appropriate fonts that reflects the area being advertised.
- Incorporating a known travel slogan or development of a new travel slogan.
- You will be creating 2 of these posters.

Magazine Cover Project
We have done a lot of projects in Photoshop and learned a great deal of skills. Now it is time to apply all this new found knowledge and skills to an original design of your own. In this project, you will apply the Elements and Principles of Design to create an original, well designed magazine cover.
You will need to create a magazine of your very own! Open a new document in Photoshop, the dimensions will need to be 9 inches by 12 inches at 300 DPI/Resolution. You will be creating a logo/title for your magazine to go across the top. You will need to add a large cover image and a minimum of 2 smaller images on the cover. The large image should connect or interfere with your magazine heading in some way. These could be celebrities, products, places, etc...Make sure that all the images you use are masked cleanly and flow together. Then you will need to add your various articles and headlines to your magazine cover. You will need a minimum of 5 articles.
Use various appropriated fonts that work together with your design. Pay extra attention to the principles and elements of design (color, line, shape, textures, contrast, balance, unity, emphasis, and proportion!!) Focus on the layout of all of your elements together to create a good looking, clean designs.
Don't forget to add the month & year and a bar-code Make your cover looks as real as possible!

Use Illustrator's tools, menus, and palettes to create a complex vector image with polygonal shapes.
Assignment:
You have been hired as a graphic designer by The North Carolina Zoo. They want you to create a colorful graphic animal theme. You are to follow the directions given by the project manager for the target audience to complete the project. Once complete then you should review the checklist for grading criteria before turning in your work.
Create a Colorful Polygonal Animal by selecting an image of animal online and then using polygonal shapes and triangles to design a colorful animal shape recreation Challenge yourself to include gradients, feathering, or transparency.
You will be graded on a difficulty rating based on your illustrator or photoshop technique and attention to detail as well as your creativity. See the examples for ideas. Your image size is 800 width and 600 height.
Save your completed graphic as an Illustrator or Photoshop file. Email your final project to Mr. Philip.

Monday - March 6th: (Finish your Hybrid Animals before moving on.)
Mashup Challenge Assignment:
How do you take 2 different pictures and make them into a mash up that is completely integrated together? Select a minimum of 2 photographs that you think could be put together in a way that makes a new thing. Make sure you can't tell where the mash ups occur. BE CREATIVE!! You will need to make at least 3 Mash Ups for this assignment. Make sure you don't use any of the ideas you see here. Instead BE CREATIVE!! This is a test of both your photoshop abilities and your creative skills. When I look at this, I should not be able to tell where the images were combined. You will need to find your own high quality images.

Hybrid Animal Assignment
Create an Animal Hybrid of 2 or More Animals in Adobe Photoshop. Use blending techniques learned earlier in the class and place the newly created animal in its natural habitat/environment. You will need to create at least 3 different hybrid animals and email them to me. There are 2 tutorials below that will help you with this process. See examples above. You can not use the examples, your design must be origional work.

The ultimate assignment is to produce two logos. One of each (CTE & E/MC) to submit, however we want to take some time to make sure we give them some really great options.

- What is the target audience for the Early/Middle College?
- Download the style guide below for the RESA.
- Using the style guide what 2 words describe the RESA brand?
- List 3 details from the style guide that you think will be helpful to you when you create your logo designs?
- Once you've completed the research, you will need to create 16 sketches (8 for each logo). Make sure you use the information you found on the website, the style guide, and on the contest poster when you create your sketches.

Personal Brand Logo Project
Monday - October 10th:
We are going to embark on our first major project in Illustrator - Creating your own, personal brand logo. This project will involve research, design, and instruction. The entire project is worth 150 points and will NOT be completed in 1 day. You will be graded on the practice activity, content of your research paper, the sketches and creation of your logo, the written step by step guidelines that you create to teach someone else how to duplicate your logo, and the recreation of your logo from your peer that used your guidelines. You will need to be thorough and specific throughout the entire process in order to be successful on this assignment. I want excellence rather than speed on this project so take your time and show me what you can do! Good luck - I know that we are going to see and learn some amazing things through this project!

You will complete a minimum 2 page research paper regarding copyright infringement. You will answer a series of questions in paper format. This means real paragraphs. A numbered paper with typed out questions and responses will NOT be accepted. You will need to answer the questions in paragraph format as if writing a research paper. The questions are designed to prompt you regarding the objective of the paper. The following question should get you started, but please don't limit yourself to answering just these questions:

You will sketch ideas for your logo - this should be a hand sketched project, no technology should be used. It may be in pencil, pen or color, but it must be your original sketch. We are going to be using the thumbnail strategy discussed in the video to the right. 16 thumnail sketeches will be required and you will need to follow the 5 steps discussed in the video when creating your thumbnail sketches.

You will design your logo in Illustrator. You will be required to keep a step by step documented record of your logo process. At the end of the project you will give your step by step instructions to a peer and they will have to recreate your logo using only your written instructions. Visual aids will not be allowed. You will submit the logo that your peer created following your step-by-step instructions with the rest of your assignment.

Your project packet must be stapled together and include ALL of the following items:

You will create 2 of your your own emoji stories. You will have to create a minimum of 3 emojis for each story, that when put together tells a story or say a phrase. Challenge yourself to include gradients, feathering, or transparency. Your emojis should have lots of different shapes. You CANNOT use an emoji that already exists. Obviously the story or phrase must be school appropriate.
You will be graded on a difficulty rating based on your illustrator technique and attention to detail as well as your creativity. Download the worksheet below and put your emoji's on this document. And don't forget to put what your illustrations means at the bottom.
